THE FIRST 1,000,000 WORDS YOU WRITE WILL PROBABLY BE BAD.
When I first heard this, I was astounded! I thought my writing was amazing! (Rereading it years later proved otherwise.)
However, it gave me a lot of perspective. I loved what I was writing, but I knew I had room to improve.
Writing is a continuous process. The more you do it, the better you will be.
WRITE WHAT YOU WANT TO READ.
You will be reading your book over and over and over again. Trust me.
If you don’t enjoy what you’re reading, the editing process will be even more unbearable.
Editing is hard enough. You might as well enjoy what you’re doing!
KEEP AN OPEN MIND.
Acknowledge that you might not know everything. When you’re asking for feedback, your commenters are trying to make the story better.
Everyone has an opinion, especially when it comes to writing. Know which opinions to accept and which to ignore.
Most importantly, keep an open mind when you’re writing. This might force you to rewrite an entire chapter, but it will all be worth it in the end!
